HAPPY LONG WEEKEND :)
Research Project Due Monday, November 19th
Assignment:5-Paragraph Informational Research Essay
Topic:Charles Darwin’s theory on natural selection on animal variation and adaptation
Standard Addressed: Use evidence to construct an explanation for how variations in characteristics among individuals within the same species may provide advantages to those individuals in their survival and reproduction.
Students have been learning about animal adaptation’s and behaviors since we returned from Fall Break. We have been discussing and exploring the 13 finch types Charles Darwin discovered on the Galapagos Island and how these birds adapted to their environments over time.
Each student has been assigned to a specific bird they will conduct research on and write about in essay form. Your student is required to turn in a 5-paragraph informational research essay.Students may write or type these essays. IF they type, it must be double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and 12-point Times New Roman font—no exceptions. Paragraphs must be 4 to 5 sentences.
Along with the essay, your student can do the following for extra credit. This is their chance to be creative, so they are not limited to this list. (This is optional, BUT they provided these ideas during our brainstorm and were VERY excited):
We will have in class research days where I will be assisting the students in their findings and allowing time to meet one on one. They are expected to write their essay outside of school as homework.
When conducting research on their assigned Finch, they need to cite their evidence and provide credit to where they found their sources. They have learned from Mrs. Hutchens about plagiarism and stealing others work off the internet. Students need to provide website links on a separate sheet of paper. An example of what is expected is on my website and will be shown in class. Example Here.
Students SHOULD use academic vocabulary in this essay. They will be graded on the proper use of their vocabulary terms within their writing. Vocabulary terms can be found on my website.
