Classroom Economy
This year, we will build an economy within the walls of our classroom. This will give students the opportunity to develop real-world skills such as working, receiving a paycheck, paying rent on their desk, buying their desk, paying taxes, and paying fines (or sanctions as we will call them). The classroom economy helps students learn valuable life skills such as organization, the value of saving, and delayed gratification. Rather than being told about the importance of these skills, they actually experience them.
Students will be expected to apply and interview for the classroom jobs they are interested in. Jobs will change every 9 weeks.
Students will be paid monthly for completing their classroom jobs. They will also have the opportunity to earn bonus money for going above and beyond in the classroom or school community.
We will also be using ClassDojo to award points for model behavior. These points may be traded in for classroom money. ClassDojo will also be a way to communicate with parents via text message and send reminders, pictures, ect.
Once a month, Ms.Lake and I will open the classroom store and/or hold an auction where students may use their money to buy rewards, privileges, and more!
Don’t be surprised if your student comes home one day with questions about paying rent or regrets about overbidding for an auction item. You might find it a great opportunity to have a thoughtful discussion about financial responsibility. If you have any questions about the classroom economy, please feel free to contact me!
Our classroom BankID is 47344.
